Al-Qur'an Verses About Mathematics

Mathematics certainly is not strange things in everyone's ears. Start from elementary, junior high school,senior high school, university students until parents must know this lesson. Mathematics almost talk over about numeral, digit, amount, and calculation. Maybe not all people loves mathematics, even there are some people who really hate mathematics with the main reason of course about number and formula that complicated enough to be understand. But do you know? Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala also explain about mathematics in Al-Qur'an. Check this out!

Qur'an discuss about totalling

ﻭَﻟَﺒِﺜُﻮا۟ ﻓِﻰ ﻛَﻬْﻔِﻬِﻢْ ﺛَﻠَٰﺚَ ﻣِﺎ۟ﺋَﺔٍ ﺳِﻨِﻴﻦَ ﻭَٱﺯْﺩَاﺩُﻭا۟ ﺗِﺴْﻌًﺎ

And (it is said) they tarried in their Cave three hundred years and add nine" (Holy Qur'an Al-Kahf : 25)

This serve explain about how long the Al-Kahf people live in the cave. That is 300 years plus 9 years, or in other words 309 years.

Qur'an discuss about diminution

ﻭَﻟَﻘَﺪْ ﺃَﺭْﺳَﻠْﻨَﺎ ﻧُﻮﺣًﺎ ﺇِﻟَﻰٰ ﻗَﻮْﻣِﻪِۦ ﻓَﻠَﺒِﺚَ ﻓِﻴﻬِﻢْ ﺃَﻟْﻒَ ﺳَﻨَﺔٍ ﺇِﻻَّ ﺧَﻤْﺴِﻴﻦَ ﻋَﺎﻣًﺎ ﻓَﺄَﺧَﺬَﻫُﻢُ ٱﻟﻄُّﻮﻓَﺎﻥُ ﻭَﻫُﻢْ ﻇَٰﻠِﻤُﻮﻥَ

And verily we sent Noah (as Our messenger) unto his folk, and he continued with them for a thousand years save fifty years; and the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers." (Holy Qur'an Al-ankaboot:14)

This verse explain about how long Nuh ‘alaihissalam lives with his community, that is 1000 years minus 50 years or in other words 950 years.

Qur'an discuss about multiplication

ٱﻟﺰَّاﻧِﻴَﺔُ ﻭَٱﻟﺰَّاﻧِﻰ ﻓَﭑﺟْﻠِﺪُﻭا۟ ﻛُﻞَّ ﻭَٰﺣِﺪٍ ﻣِّﻨْﻬُﻤَﺎ ﻣِﺎ۟ﺋَﺔَ ﺟَﻠْﺪَﺓٍ ۖ ﻭَﻻَ ﺗَﺄْﺧُﺬْﻛُﻢ ﺑِﻬِﻤَﺎ ﺭَﺃْﻓَﺔٌ ﻓِﻰ ﺩِﻳﻦِ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﺇِﻥ ﻛُﻨﺘُﻢْ ﺗُﺆْﻣِﻨُﻮﻥَ ﺑِﭑﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﻭَٱﻟْﻴَﻮْﻡِ ٱﻻْءَﺧِﺮِ ۖ ﻭَﻟْﻴَﺸْﻬَﺪْ ﻋَﺬَاﺑَﻬُﻤَﺎ ﻃَﺎٓﺋِﻔَﺔٌ ﻣِّﻦَ ٱﻟْﻤُﺆْﻣِﻨِﻴﻦَ

The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment" (Holy Qur'an An-Noor:2)

This verse tell us about punishment for people who do sexual act outside mariage. For the woman and the man, they will got punishment a hundred of lash.

The other verse..

ﻭَٱﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﻳَﺮْﻣُﻮﻥَ ٱﻟْﻤُﺤْﺼَﻨَٰﺖِ ﺛُﻢَّ ﻟَﻢْ ﻳَﺄْﺗُﻮا۟ ﺑِﺄَﺭْﺑَﻌَﺔِ ﺷُﻬَﺪَآءَ ﻓَﭑﺟْﻠِﺪُﻭﻫُﻢْ ﺛَﻤَٰﻨِﻴﻦَ ﺟَﻠْﺪَﺓً ﻭَﻻَ ﺗَﻘْﺒَﻠُﻮا۟ ﻟَﻬُﻢْ ﺷَﻬَٰﺪَﺓً ﺃَﺑَﺪًا ۚ ﻭَﺃُﻭ۟ﻟَٰٓﺌِﻚَ ﻫُﻢُ ٱﻟْﻔَٰﺴِﻘُﻮﻥَ

And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers" (Holy Qur'an An-Noor:4)

Qur'an discuss about fraction

۞ ﻭَﻟَﻜُﻢْ ﻧِﺼْﻒُ ﻣَﺎ ﺗَﺮَﻙَ ﺃَﺯْﻭَٰﺟُﻜُﻢْ ﺇِﻥ ﻟَّﻢْ ﻳَﻜُﻦ ﻟَّﻬُﻦَّ ﻭَﻟَﺪٌ ۚ ﻓَﺈِﻥ ﻛَﺎﻥَ ﻟَﻬُﻦَّ ﻭَﻟَﺪٌ ﻓَﻠَﻜُﻢُ ٱﻟﺮُّﺑُﻊُ ﻣِﻤَّﺎ ﺗَﺮَﻛْﻦَ ۚ ﻣِﻦۢ ﺑَﻌْﺪِ ﻭَﺻِﻴَّﺔٍ ﻳُﻮﺻِﻴﻦَ ﺑِﻬَﺎٓ ﺃَﻭْ ﺩَﻳْﻦٍ ۚ ﻭَﻟَﻬُﻦَّ ٱﻟﺮُّﺑُﻊُ ﻣِﻤَّﺎ ﺗَﺮَﻛْﺘُﻢْ ﺇِﻥ ﻟَّﻢْ ﻳَﻜُﻦ ﻟَّﻜُﻢْ ﻭَﻟَﺪٌ ۚ ﻓَﺈِﻥ ﻛَﺎﻥَ ﻟَﻜُﻢْ ﻭَﻟَﺪٌ ﻓَﻠَﻬُﻦَّ ٱﻟﺜُّﻤُﻦُ ﻣِﻤَّﺎ ﺗَﺮَﻛْﺘُﻢ ۚ ﻣِّﻦۢ ﺑَﻌْﺪِ ﻭَﺻِﻴَّﺔٍ ﺗُﻮﺻُﻮﻥَ ﺑِﻬَﺎٓ ﺃَﻭْ ﺩَﻳْﻦٍ ۗ ﻭَﺇِﻥ ﻛَﺎﻥَ ﺭَﺟُﻞٌ ﻳُﻮﺭَﺙُ ﻛَﻠَٰﻠَﺔً ﺃَﻭِ ٱﻣْﺮَﺃَﺓٌ ﻭَﻟَﻪُۥٓ ﺃَﺥٌ ﺃَﻭْ ﺃُﺧْﺖٌ ﻓَﻠِﻜُﻞِّ ﻭَٰﺣِﺪٍ ﻣِّﻨْﻬُﻤَﺎ ٱﻟﺴُّﺪُﺱُ ۚ ﻓَﺈِﻥ ﻛَﺎﻧُﻮٓا۟ ﺃَﻛْﺜَﺮَ ﻣِﻦ ﺫَٰﻟِﻚَ ﻓَﻬُﻢْ ﺷُﺮَﻛَﺎٓءُ ﻓِﻰ ٱﻟﺜُّﻠُﺚِ ۚ ﻣِﻦۢ ﺑَﻌْﺪِ ﻭَﺻِﻴَّﺔٍ ﻳُﻮﺻَﻰٰ ﺑِﻬَﺎٓ ﺃَﻭْ ﺩَﻳْﻦٍ ﻏَﻴْﺮَ ﻣُﻀَﺎٓﺭٍّ ۚ ﻭَﺻِﻴَّﺔً ﻣِّﻦَ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪِ ۗ ﻭَٱﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﻋَﻠِﻴﻢٌ ﺣَﻠِﻴﻢٌ

"And unto you belongeth a half of that which your wives leave, if they have no child; but if they have a child then unto you the fourth of that which they leave, after any legacy they may have bequeathed, or debt (they may have contracted, hath been paid). And unto them belongeth the fourth of that which ye leave if ye have no child, but if ye have a child then the eighth of that which ye leave, after any legacy ye may have bequeathed, or debt (ye may have contracted, hath been paid). And if a man or a woman have a distant heir (having left neither parent nor child), and he (or she) have a brother or a sister (only on the mother's side) then to each of them twain (the brother and the sister) the sixth, and if they be more than two, then they shall be sharers in the third, after any legacy that may have been bequeathed or debt (contracted) not injuring (the heirs by willing away more than a third of the heritage) hath been paid. A commandment from Allah. Allah is Knower, Indulgent." (Holy Qur'an An-Nisaa:12)

This verse tell us legacy distribution. Here mentioned "a half", "a third", "one fourth", "the sixth" and thats all the fraction form that usually use in mathematics.

Now lets check another verse..

۞ ﺇِﻥَّ ﺭَﺑَّﻚَ ﻳَﻌْﻠَﻢُ ﺃَﻧَّﻚَ ﺗَﻘُﻮﻡُ ﺃَﺩْﻧَﻰٰ ﻣِﻦ ﺛُﻠُﺜَﻰِ ٱﻟَّﻴْﻞِ ﻭَﻧِﺼْﻔَﻪُۥ ﻭَﺛُﻠُﺜَﻪُۥ ﻭَﻃَﺎٓﺋِﻔَﺔٌ ﻣِّﻦَ ٱﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﻣَﻌَﻚَ ۚ ﻭَٱﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﻳُﻘَﺪِّﺭُ ٱﻟَّﻴْﻞَ ﻭَٱﻟﻨَّﻬَﺎﺭَ ۚ ﻋَﻠِﻢَ ﺃَﻥ ﻟَّﻦ ﺗُﺤْﺼُﻮﻩُ ﻓَﺘَﺎﺏَ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻜُﻢْ ۖ ﻓَﭑﻗْﺮَءُﻭا۟ ﻣَﺎ ﺗَﻴَﺴَّﺮَ ﻣِﻦَ ٱﻟْﻘُﺮْءَاﻥِ ۚ ﻋَﻠِﻢَ ﺃَﻥ ﺳَﻴَﻜُﻮﻥُ ﻣِﻨﻜُﻢ ﻣَّﺮْﺿَﻰٰ ۙ ﻭَءَاﺧَﺮُﻭﻥَ ﻳَﻀْﺮِﺑُﻮﻥَ ﻓِﻰ ٱﻷَْﺭْﺽِ ﻳَﺒْﺘَﻐُﻮﻥَ ﻣِﻦ ﻓَﻀْﻞِ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪِ ۙ ﻭَءَاﺧَﺮُﻭﻥَ ﻳُﻘَٰﺘِﻠُﻮﻥَ ﻓِﻰ ﺳَﺒِﻴﻞِ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪِ ۖ ﻓَﭑﻗْﺮَءُﻭا۟ ﻣَﺎ ﺗَﻴَﺴَّﺮَ ﻣِﻨْﻪُ ۚ ﻭَﺃَﻗِﻴﻤُﻮا۟ ٱﻟﺼَّﻠَﻮٰﺓَ ﻭَءَاﺗُﻮا۟ ٱﻟﺰَّﻛَﻮٰﺓَ ﻭَﺃَﻗْﺮِﺿُﻮا۟ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪَ ﻗَﺮْﺿًﺎ ﺣَﺴَﻨًﺎ ۚ ﻭَﻣَﺎ ﺗُﻘَﺪِّﻣُﻮا۟ ﻷَِﻧﻔُﺴِﻜُﻢ ﻣِّﻦْ ﺧَﻴْﺮٍ ﺗَﺠِﺪُﻭﻩُ ﻋِﻨﺪَ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﻫُﻮَ ﺧَﻴْﺮًا ﻭَﺃَﻋْﻈَﻢَ ﺃَﺟْﺮًا ۚ ﻭَٱﺳْﺘَﻐْﻔِﺮُﻭا۟ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪَ ۖ ﺇِﻥَّ ٱﻟﻠَّﻪَ ﻏَﻔُﻮﺭٌ ﺭَّﺣِﻴﻢٌۢ

"Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." (Holy Qur'an Al-Muzzammil:20)

This verse explain about the night time distribution. Here mentioned "two-thirds","a half" and "a third".

Qur'an discuss about odd and even numbers

ﻭَٱﻟﺸَّﻔْﻊِ ﻭَٱﻟْﻮَﺗْﺮِ

"And the Even and the Odd" (Holy Qur'an Al-Fajr:3)

Even number like a thousand monts just like mentioned in this following verse

ﻟَﻴْﻠَﺔُ ٱﻟْﻘَﺪْﺭِ ﺧَﻴْﺮٌ ﻣِّﻦْ ﺃَﻟْﻒِ ﺷَﻬْﺮٍ

The Night of Power is better than a thousand months." (Holy Qur'an Al-Qadr:3)

Meanwhile for the odd number can we find in the following verse

ﻓَﻌَﻘَﺮُﻭﻫَﺎ ﻓَﻘَﺎﻝَ ﺗَﻤَﺘَّﻌُﻮا۟ ﻓِﻰ ﺩَاﺭِﻛُﻢْ ﺛَﻠَٰﺜَﺔَ ﺃَﻳَّﺎﻡٍ ۖ ﺫَٰﻟِﻚَ ﻭَﻋْﺪٌ ﻏَﻴْﺮُ ﻣَﻜْﺬُﻭﺏٍ

But they hamstrung her, and then he said: Enjoy life in your dwelling-place three days! This is a threat that will not be belied." (Holy Qur'an Hud:65)

So that is a little discussion about Qur'an verses that related to mathematics and clarify that there are unlimited knowledge in Al-Qur'an. More we recite Qur'an,more we know how great it is that comes from Allah 'Azza Wa Jalla.
